
Novomikhailovsky Palace, now in place INSTITUTE OF ORIENTAL STUDIES (18, Dvortsovaya naberezhnaya), was built in 1857-1861 by A.I.Stakenschneider for the Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich (the youngest son of Nikolas I). In the palace architecture elements of Italian Renaissance and Baroque styles are combined. The right wing of the building is occupied by the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russia's Academy of Sciences (the St Petersburg's branch), with its unique collection of Eastern manuscripts and documents.
