In the rooms of the apartment, and particularly in the nursery, one can feel the atmosphere of harmony and family happiness which were granted to Feodor Dostoevsky in the last years of his hard life. The writer tutored his own children. He taught them history, Russian grammar and geography. He would come round to the nursery in the evenings to read to his children bedtime stories by Pushkin, Dickens, Walter Scott, or chapters from Karamzins History of Russia.
