The Carpenter Lane. The writer's house in Malaya Meshchanskaya stood at the corner of this infamous lane: in its 16 houses there were 18 kabaks (drinking houses) to accomodate the tastes of the low classes. The hero of Crime and Punishment Raskolnikov rents an apartment in the lane and is woken every night by the shouts of drunken men leaving the kabaks for homes.
